After extensive discussion between the NRA and the NMLRA, the organizations agree that if a potential Instructor Candidate is sufficiently knowledgeable and skilled to pass the extremely detailed and comprehensive pre-course qualification in Appendix 7 of the NRA Training Counselor Guide, there is no need for them to complete the Basic Muzzleloading course.

Summary of the pre-course qualification:
1. Pass the student exam with a 90% or better.

2. Safely identify if the following pistol action types are unloaded:
a. percussion cap pistol
b. flintlock pistol
c. percussion cap and ball revolver

3. Safely load any of the 3 pistol action types, identify and correct failure to fire.

4. Safely fire a cap and ball revolver at a 9” target at 15 yards, 10 shots, untimed. 2.5 points per hit in the 9” circle, minimum passing score is 20/25 (8 out of 10 shots).

5. Safely identify if the following rifle action types are unloaded:
a. percussion cap rifle
b. flintlock rifle

6. Safely load either of the 2 rifle action types, identify and correct failure to fire.

7. Safely fire either action type of muzzleloading rifle at a 9” target at 25 yards, 10 shots, untimed, 5 shots each from Benchrest and standing unsupported position. 2.5 points per hit in the 9” circle, minimum passing score is 20/25 (8 out of 10 shots).

8. Safely identify if the following shotgun action types are unloaded:
a. percussion cap shotgun
b. flintlock shotgun

9. Safely load either of the 2 shotgun action types, identify and correct failure to fire.

10. Safely fire either action type of muzzleloading shotgun at straight-away clay targets from the 10-yard line on a registered trap field, 10 shots, minimum passing score is 5 broken clays out of 10 shots).
